Parker wasn’t used to living with so many people. During the day, he could deal with it because most of the mages were busy. Even at lunch, they preferred eating in their office or wherever they were working.

Dinner was different.

At dinner, they all gathered in the massive dining room. Well, all except Ansley. Parker had yet to see him during meals, and even though Ansley had reassured him that it was because he was working, he couldn’t help but wonder if there was more behind it. Could the mage still be avoiding Parker? He’d given Parker tips as to what to do, but the library was intimidating. There were so many books that Parker didn’t know where to start, which meant he was going to need help. He would have gone back to Ansley, but he was afraid of pushing the man away. Ansley already seemed so wary of him. Would Parker pushing back into his life make things worse?

But if Parker kept his distance, could they build a relationship? Parker wasn’t an idiot. He was aware that Ansley had hidden many things from him about when he’d been Byron. He’d limited himself to explaining that he and Byron had worked together but that it hadn’t been for long. Parker had gotten the impression that he’d been an asshole as Byron, and it didn’t sit right with him. If he’d hurt Ansley, he wanted to fix it, but he didn’t know if he could. Would Ansley allow him to?

“You need to taste this,” Matthias said, dropping a spoonful of what looked like mashed potatoes on Parker’s plate. “It’s delicious. I need to know who cooked it,” he told the table.

All the mages were there except for Jarvis and Ansley. No one seemed surprised that Ansley wasn’t present, but Jarvis was usually at dinner with them. Parker wondered why he wasn’t tonight. Maybe he had something to do?

“Jillian takes good care of us,” Dallin explained. “She’s the best cook we’ve had in decades.”

“She’s a woman?” Matthias wrinkled his nose. “Dammit. I wanted to marry her.”

Dallin laughed. “I suppose you still can.”

“Yes, but I’m not into women that way. I might change that for these mashed potatoes, though.”

Tyne grunted from his chair next to Dallin, but he didn’t point out how ridiculous Matthias was being. Matthias was human, and Parker had been afraid that the mages might treat him differently, but everyone had been welcoming so far. Matthias wasn’t the only human who lived in the castle. Everyone but the mages was human, from the cook to the housekeepers to the assistants who helped the mages with their work. Parker had asked Penley why none of the mages seemed to have apprentices, but the question had made Penley so uncomfortable that Parker hadn’t pushed when he hadn’t explained. It had made him curious, though.

“We’ve all wanted to marry Jillian at one time or another,” Jarvis said as he walked in.

Parker looked up, a smile already on his face, to greet the mage.
